The García Lorca Anecdote

Guestbook excerpt

This restaurant was one of the favourites haunts of the famous Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca.

One day in the Christmas holiday Federico invited Damasco Alonso, who was one one the poets of the "generation of 27", to eat in the restaurant.

Damasco had just been to a meeting in Sevilla concerning the poetry of Góngora (who is the Spanish equivalent of Shakespeare).

During the meal they talked about poetry and Federico said that the people in Granada were particularly cultured and most were able to recite some lines of poetry. To prove it, he called a waiter over from the other side of the room. As if he were ordering, he asked for a "Soledad de Góngora". The waiter, who was the owner of the restaurant, recited the entire first section of the poem Soledad de Góngora much to the complete amazement of Alonso Damasco. It was even more amazing because this poem  has especially difficult syntax and meter.
